![]() In the end he deemed it best to go at once to Nestor son of Neleus, and see if between them they could find any way of the Achaeans from destruction. When he looked upon the plain of Troy he marveled at the many watchfires burning in front of Ilion, and at the sound of pipes and flutes and of the hum of men, but when presently he turned towards the ships and hosts of the Achaeans, he tore his hair by handfuls before Zeus on high, and groaned aloud for the very disquietness of his soul. ![]() As when fair Hera's lord flashes his lightning in token of great rain or hail or snow when the snow-flakes whiten the ground, or again as a sign that he will open the wide jaws of hungry war, even so did Agamemnon heave many a heavy sigh, for his soul trembled within him. ![]() Now the other princes of the Achaeans slept soundly the whole night through, but Agamemnon son of Atreus was troubled, so that he could get no rest. ![]() ![]() ![]() From over a hundred unread books in my bookshelves, I chose this Hemingway classic. ![]() Unfortunately, the book was left to gather dust until I contemplated on what book to read. Hemingway, a war veteran, does have a fascination with war fiction. From the synopsis, I have surmised that it would be more similar to the former. However, I have read two of Hemingway’s works – A Farewell to Arms and The Old Men and the Sea. I am thankful to him because it is one of the books that I have been wanting to read although I barely had an iota on what the story is about. Since he has read the story already, he gave me the book that he painstakingly found while rummaging through the heaps of books. While browsing a book sale, a fellow reader recommended to me Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom The Bell Tolls. Facing certain failure, Jordan learns the true meaning of loyalty and sacrifice and the high price of liberty. Set amidst the tragedy of the Spanish Civil War, it tells the story of Robert Jordan, an American volunteer guerilla who has only three days to plan the destruction of a strategically important bridge. Written in the late 1930s, when democracy faces its greatest peril, For Whom the Bell Tolls is Hemingway’s masterful novel about love, death, honor and betrayal. Genre: War Novel Historical Fiction Synopsis ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The film sees Johnny helping people he meets with his newfound powers. Perhaps the one thing that I thought was keeping this movie out of truly great status is the fact that its story, while intriguing, feels a little more episodic than one, long narrative. I love me some Cronenberg but Walken and Martin Sheen are absolutely excellent here. I think Walken, Cronenberg's direction and Sheen's Stillson character more than make the film into what it is. With all that out of the way, my point in this, is the fact that if you needed proof to see that Walken can be a really good, at times, great actor, then you need look no further than this. Say what you want, but he's got a very charismatic on-screen presence. Perhaps its more that his eccentricities in his facial expression, his voice inflections, his body language have given him sort of a cult following past just being a good actor. ![]() I don't think I've ever seen someone say this, though I'm sure some are of this mindset. I've never understood people who say that Christopher Walken isn't a good actor. ![]() ![]() ![]() (5) Most faked paintings are not overt imitations. ![]() S’not fair to blame a person fr’only tryin’ to help.’Įthel, his snooty elder sister, does her very best to pretend William does not exist. The disasters that dog him are never his own fault. A born leader steeped in unfailing optimism, William hurls himself wholeheartedly into every mad endeavour, amusement or new ‘career’. She had a gift for bringing to William’s village, on one pretext after another, a host of extraordinary characters, all of whom somehow end up tangling with William and his motley gang of ‘Outlaws’. Richmal Crompton’s stories are rich, inventive and oh, so very funny. But I do know that he at once became my own imaginary brother, my closest secret friend. I don’t remember when I stole the book from her, and every other William book she ever had. On its brick-red cover was the emblem of a cheery-looking William wearing his school cap awry. Susan was given her first set of William stories for Christmas in 1953. But no one told me, so I learned to read along with the others, and have spent most of my waking hours since with my head in a book. The health visitor thought of it merely as the simplest form of babysitting. Possibly to save my mother’s sanity, I was sent to the local infant school well before time. ![]() ![]() When my sister Susan was six and I was three, my parents tried for a son and had, instead, triplet girls. ![]() ![]() It’s really about the romance and not about sex (there isn’t any!). The king lived 300 miles away on the main island of Tongatapu.Īfter settling into our hosts’ home we discovered a big celebration would occur during the next three days. We came to the Tongan islands representing South Seas Christian Ministries (SSCM), in August, 1998, leading a team of 12 young adults and five leaders for an outreach. “You look beautiful, like a Tongan woman.” Amazing! I felt anything but beautiful, damp with sweat and hair done without benefit of hair dryer or curling iron! He could see me through a window and spoke to me, admiring my traditional dress. The king’s chef busily prepared a sumptuous feast for his majesty and distinguished guests, which, I presumed, included the beady eyed fox-bats. I sat straight as a board, sweat beading on my forehead. However, the finely woven Pandamus leaf mat, which extended from my midsection to knees, made it hard to breathe. My gracious Tongan hostess had cinched a Tongan ta’ovala tightly over my dress so I’d be appropriately dressed for the King. I sat awaiting my meeting with King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV of Tonga in a covered area next to the Royal kitchen. Bats are an island delicacy and would, no doubt, be part of the fare. Their tiny fox-like heads and beady eyes stared at me although they were dead and prepared for cooking. ![]() The Day I Became a Friend of the King of Tongaīats!
